Black Swan

Today I am dropping off my work for the art show I am participating in tomorrow.  I am really excited to see all the other artists' work; it should be a fun evening!  Again, if you're around Dallas, TX and would like to see some interesting art, come to Quixotic World around 8pm on May 10.
Sorry for the poor quality of the photograph below, but I wanted to show you another one of the pieces I am submitting for the show!

Bows & Stripes

Today is a super quick sketch I did a few weeks back of a lovely dress I saw on pinterest.  I love stripes & bows, so this dress is perfect for me!  What are some things you love in a dress?

A Hot Pink Afro

Here is one of my pieces for my art show coming up next weekend.  I love how she turned out with her huge, hot pink afro!  I think she will fit in nicely with the other fashion portraits I've done, like here and here.  Let me know what you think of my latest piece in the comments below!

Custom Illustrations

I wanted to show you all a pretty illustration I made of a lovely client named Ali.  She requested a sketch of herself and this is the outcome.  For those of you who are curious, I do custom illustrations in peoples' likeness... eyecolor, hair color, a particular outfit, piece of jewelry, shoes, bags, etc!  It's a relatively quick turnaround - usually around a week.  You can email me at MelissaNadineCauthen@gmail.com if you have any questions or requests!

Yellow

As I told you all in this post, I am participating in an art show in Dallas, TX on May 10.  I am super excited and have been working hard on many pieces for the show.  I just finished this one last weekend and I love how she turned out.  If you live in Dallas, you should definitely try to  make it out!  There will be over 700 people at the show, so it should be a great evening!

Carrie Underwood, ACM's 2013

Happy Monday!  Today's illustration is of Carrie Underwood from the ACM's this year.  She always looks stunning and I just loved her interveiw on the red carpet where she talked about her dress.  She said that she picked her dress because it reminded her of spring and made her happy.  Hope you all enjoy it!

Abstract

In addition to the fashion illustrations and sketches I create, I also create custom canvases.  I love to do abstract paintings, but I also love to do larger, canvas versions of my fashion illustrations and portraits.  Today I am featuring one of my abstracts that I recently painted.  I love pink, and this abstract definitely shows it!  I've been working on many new pieces for the art show I am participating in on May 10, so I'll be sharing those here soon!  What do you think of abstract paintings?

Alice & Olivia, RTW

Today's illustration is of a dress from the Alice and Olivia RTW Spring 2013 collection.  All the colors in the dress, not to mention the stripes, make for a bright & cheery sketch.  I love the top of the dress, with it's strapless, sweetheart neckline.  I definitely tend to gravitate toward dresses in the spring & summer, what about you?

Prada, Spring 2013

Black and white is a big trend for spring this year.  While it may be a little bit out there to thing of these colors as typical spring colors, the graphic prints and silhouettes are too bold and pretty to pass up.  I'm still dreaming about pretty colors, as illustrated here and here, but I like the idea of stepping outside my comfort zone, fashion-wise.  The illustration today is inspired by a pretty Prada dress with a bold & edgy stripe detail  What's your favorite spring/summer fashion trend?

A Pretty Green Skirt

Today's illustration is inspired by a pretty skirt I saw on Pinterest.  I love the green color and flowy fabric, perfect for a spring evening look.  I had a lot of fun creating this illustration with the yellow background and super high heels.  Hope you like it!

Blue

Here is a quick sketch I did a few weeks back. Blue eyeshadow is back! :)

A Simple Illustration

Happy Friday, everyone!  Today's illustration is a very simple one, but I really like her.  I've always wanted to cut my hair super short like this, but I don't think I would ever have the nerve to do it!

Thank you so much for reading and viewing my blog!  I love reading the comments and emails you send.
As always, feel free to send me a request for a sketch or an inspiration photograph and I'll try to illustrate it on the blog!
One more special item: I am offering a 5$ off discount in my etsy shop of any $20 or more purchase!  Please use the coupon code GRANDOPENING to redeem!  You can find my store here.

I am off to Las Vegas this weekend for a quick vacation.  I'm sure I will find lots of inspiration there for some illustrations and sketches next week!

Dry Bar

A few weeks ago, I was visiting Dallas, TX and had to visit Dry Bar.  If you aren't familiar with the concept, it's basically a hair salon where they feature blow outs and styling only, no cuts or color.  The salon had a gorgeous setup with a chic nod to an actual bartop.  They also have a cute menu with styles named after cocktails - love it!  I was so inspired to sketch the two styles I wanted: Straight Up and Mai Tai.  I ended up going with the Mai Tai, which was loose waves.
Have you ever been to a blow dry bar?  What did you order?

Coachella

A few weeks back, someone suggested I do a summer concert festival series.  I thought it was a great idea and decided to save it for when Coachella came around.  Coachella has it's own sense of fashion & style.  It seems different than SXSW and other music festivals I have been to.  In this sketch, I created a girl with high-waisted denim shorts, a tie-dye tube top, super bright accessories, and a headband.  I love how she turned out!  Are you going to Coachella?  What will you wear?

Kate Spade Saturday

Today's sketch is of a gorgeous dress from Kate Spade Saturday.  I love the blue splatter and the length - perfect for spring & summer!  I am totally obsessed with everything Kate Spade right now (as I've mentioned before).  I mean, look at this bag!  Love.  Who's your favorite designer right now?

Orange Flowers

Lately, I've been experimenting with fashion portraits featuring strong, bright colors.  This is one of the pieces I've created.  I really like the bold flower in her hair coupled with her dark eyeshadow.  Hope you all enjoy!

Pink Friday

When I was in 8th grade, I dyed my hair pink... on accident.  The box said temporary but my hair just sucked up the color and it stayed pink well into the summer.  Lately, colored hair has become a thing.  Even though I will not be sporting this look again (once is enough for me), I wanted to illustrate a pretty lady with bright hair.
Have you ever dyed your hair a crazy color?  I'd love to know how it turned out.  Have a great weekend!

Glitter & Gold

I love glittery gold.  It was an important color in my wedding and I think it adds a certain pop that other colors just can't create.  I was struck when I saw this photo and it inspired me to add some glittery gold to a painting of mine.  I love the watercolor texture of her blouse and think that the gold glitter just adds that bit of extra texture.  What do you think of gold?  I'd love to hear what you think!

Emily from Cupcakes & Cashmere

The third sketch for my Favorite Blogger Illustration series is Emily from Cupcakes & Cashmere.  As you can probably tell from my two previous sketches of Rachel and Veronika, I love a great fashion blog.  Cupcakes & Cashmere is just that.  Emily has amazing taste in fashion, food, home decor, party planning - the list goes on!  I love browsing through her gorgeous photographs for inspiration and, of course, to covet her outfits.  A few weeks back, I fell in love with this coat and new I had to sketch it for this series... so here it is!  Hope you enjoy.

Sketching

Lately, I have been really into drawing portrait-y fashion sketches (totally a thing) of pretty models and editorials.  They are a lot different from the full body fashion sketches I do because these focus on the face and expression of the model, while the fashion sketches are usually meant to focus on an outfit or look.  Do you gravitate toward one or the other?  If so, which do you prefer?

A Gold Necklace

My project today is centered around a gorgeous necklace I recently purchased from EllandEmm on Etsy.  The shop owner, Jenn, designs and creates her own line of jewelry and everything is so pretty.  You have to be quick though, her shop sells out fast!

Speaking of Etsy, this weekend I opened up my very own shop where I sell prints of my illustrations and artwork.  I'll keep it up to date with new work that I do.  Let me know what you think!

For the piece, I used gold leafing to bring out the gold in the necklace and I love how it turned out.  I also love her piercing blue eyes.  I have some fun pieces to show you all this week, so be sure to check back!  Happy Monday :)

Veronika

Today is part two of my favorite blogger illustration series.  I am featuring the beautiful Veronika from Veronika's Blushing.  She is a style & fashion blogger from Houston, TX.  Veronika's Blushing is actually the first blog I ever started following on a daily basis.  Her style has evolved so much over the years and I love how she incorporates lots of color and fun patterns into her work wardrobe.  Here is a sketch I made of Veronika in one of my favorite J Crew skirts she has.  If you'd like to see a blogger featured on this series, send me a recommendation at MelissaNadineCauthen@gmail.com.  Hope you all have a great weekend!

A Flower Crown

I am so excited to share this painting with you all today!  It's my favorite project that I have posted on this blog.  I love her flower crown and bold lip.  I got inspiration from this picture, but saturated the colors a little bit more.  I would love an excuse to wear a flower crown like this!  What do you all think about pairing a bold lip and a bold eye?  I think it works for her!

A Blue Dress

I've had this glittery blue dress pinned for a while on Pinterest.  It's so pretty with the long sleeves, short hemline and glittery material.  Because I don't have a dress like this in my closet, I decided to sketch it!  Let me know what you think!

Color of the Year

Here is a quick sketch inspired by this image.  I tried to exaggerate the broad shoulders a little and also play with the texture in the dress.  However, the glitter I used didn't scan very well... again.  I need to work on that!  The main thing that struck me in the picture was the color of her dress.  I love the sparkly, emerald green!  Let me know what you think of my sketch!

Runway Fashion

For one of my final projects for the "Illustrating Runway Looks" class I am taking, I decided to sketch this dress.   I love the bow and texture on the skirt.  I tried to highlight these parts of the dress by adding black glitter, but it's kind of hard to see in the scan.  In real-life, the glitter & texture look amazing! I love adding embellishments like glitter and stones to a painting!  Runway fashion is so fun to draw because essentially it is a piece of art itself.  I will definitely be incorporating more runway fashion into my sketches in the future.

Paper Fashion

There are only a few more days left in the Paper Fashion class I told you all about last week.  The purpose of the class is to learn a little about sketching runway fashion.  I learned some new skills and techniques in the class and plus it was just fun to draw runway fashion in general.  Below is one of my final watercolors, although I still need to add a few embellishments.  What do you think?  I'll show some of my other final pieces next week.  Hope you all have a great weekend!

Deep Purple

This picture was my source of inspiration for this illustration today.  I love her wispy hair and somewhat creepy glare.  Instead of leaving it totally black & white, I wanted to add some deep purple to her top and lips.  I think I'm going to break out some deep plum lipstick this weekend!  I would love to know what you think about my illustration (and deep plum lipstick, for that matter)!

Pink Peonies

In this post, I mentioned that I was going to start a series of illustrations on my favorite bloggers.  Today is my first post for that series!  I am featuring Rachel, from Pink Peonies.  I found Rachel's blog a few months ago and have been hooked ever since.  Rachel has such a classic style with lots of color.  Her outfit posts usually feature things that are accessible and affordable, which makes her very relatable!

A few weeks back, she blogged about how to wear a sweater three ways.  When I saw this look, I fell in love with the neon blouse, boyfriend jeans, and heels... not to mention the pink background!  I hope you like my illustration and be sure to check out her blog.  Let me know if you think there is a fashionable blogger out there I should feature in this illustration series!

Spring Shoes

One of the many reasons I am so excited for spring is for the shoes!  I love wedges and a nice chunky heel, so spring & summer shoes are my favorite.  I love how you can wear either style during the day without looking too dressed up, yet can easily transition to something fancier at night.  I made a sketch a few weeks back of some of my favorites from Steve Madden right now.  What are your favorite types of shoes to wear?

Oscar de la Renta, Ready to Wear Spring 2013

This year, Oscar de la Renta's Ready-to-Wear Spring 2013 collection has been my favorite.  I saw this picture on Pinterest and I fell in love with the colors and texture of the top.  I began to browse through the entire collection and was floored - so gorgeous!  Here is a sketch of a few of my favorite looks.  What collections are you loving for spring/summer?

Juicing

Today is the first day of my three-day juice fast.  To get in the spirit, I drew a girl with a cute dress carrying a bag of veggies.  Do you juice?  I love doing it!  It is an acquired taste, but I feel great when I juice.  I hope you all have a fun and healthy weekend!

Springtime

This week, the weather has been so amazing and spring-like.  That, coupled with the time change last weekend and summer is basically here!  Well, in Houston, at least.  The warm weather inspired me to create this sketch with a ton of vivid color.  How is the weather where you are?  Is it feeling spring-like yet?

Inspiration

I scan through Pinterest almost daily in search of fashion inspiration for my sketches. Different things in a photograph speak to me. Usually it's color, texture, angle, or the pose of a model. So when I saw this picture, I knew I had to sketch it. The color, the sheer top, the bow, her hand on her hip all inspired me to create this piece.

Yesterday, I started an online fashion illustration class and I'm so excited to share what comes from it! We are in the beginning stages of gathering inspiration, so I will have lots of sketches coming soon. As always, if you have a request for an illustration or suggestion, let me know in the comments below!

Sisters, Part 3

Today is the last day of my sister series! In my last two sister posts, you met Nicole and Julia. Well, Alexis is my youngest sister... a senior in high school! When she was born, I was so excited because I finally had a sister with blue eyes like me. It doesn't seem like such a big deal now, but back then it was! I'm so happy and thankful to have a big family and to be so close to them. Next up, I'm thinking of doing a favorite blogger series. What do you think?

Sisters, Part 2

Today is part two of my three part sister series. In part 1, you met Nicole, my fashion photographer sister. Today is Julia, the artist. She paints some amazing pieces that are truly inspiring! Here is a sketch I did of her this weekend. I've been seeing color blocking everywhere lately. What do you think of the color blocking trend?

A Martini & Red Lipstick

I'm heading to Fredericksburg, TX this weekend to enjoy some wine and hill country views.  You know the feeling when you have a vacation coming up and that's all you think about?  Well that was me this week.  So instead of being totally unproductive, I sketched this girl a few days ago. A cute dress, red lips, and a martini - sounds like a perfect weekend to me! Next week I'm so excited to go to South by Southwest... I'll be sure to showcase some sketches of the Austin fashion.  What will you be doing this weekend?  See you all on Monday!

kate spade

Is it just me or are the new Kate Spade bags gorgeous?!  There are like 10 that I have on my wishlist.  I illustrated one of my favorites the other day and wanted to share it with you all.  I'm thinking I need to illustrate a group of women all carrying a Kate Spade bag to showcase all of my favorites... what do you think??  What are you favorite bags for spring?

a pink coat

The other day I watched a softball game outside and it was absolutely freezing and windy.  While I was there, I daydreamed about bright colored jackets with high collars, a short dress underneath, and high black heels.  Here is a sketch of what I wished I had worn to the game (although I would have probably frozen to death)

what's your favorite type of jacket for cold weather?  i'd love to hear from you!

a little black dress

I saw this picture a few weeks ago on Pinterest and fell in love with the movement.  This looks like such an interesting LBD - sleeves, ruffles, sheer fabric, and a peter pan collar.  I added a gold belt for fun ... any reason to use gold leafing liquid!   What do you look for in a LBD?

Monday, March 4, 2013

sisters, part 1

This weekend I sketched my three sisters.  This is Nicole and her child dog, Brisko.  It was fun drawing people I know in real life and trying to depict their personality in a picture.  I think this captures it well.  She has always been in to billowy dresses and tops in earthy or watery colors (ie: no pink, like me)  Her dog is a huge part of her life as well, which is why he had to be incorporated!  Let me know what you think!

Toga?

Isn't her dress just too cute?  I love the color and texture!  Sometimes I think one-shouldered dresses are a little too "toga," but this one works.  Maybe it's the color, the drapey fabric, or the length, but I could definitely use a dress like this in my spring wardrobe.  What do you think about one-shouldered dresses?

tied with a bow

i have a small obsession with bows.  so when i saw this picture, i loved it to much i had to do a sketch of it.  while it may not be appropriate to wear a bow as large as this out on a normal day, it has definitely inspired me to infuse smaller bows into my hair & wardrobe.
